Credit card gift cards are a prepaid card used to purchase merchandise or services anywhere that particular credit card is accepted. The card is issued by the same issuer as the credit card under terms and conditions determined by the credit card company. The card is loaded with value and purchases can be made as long as value remains on the card. Additional funds cannot be added to the card if the card is not a reloadable card.
Most major credit cards offer credit card gift cards. They have the logo of the credit card, and it is used like a credit card except the value of the purchase is deducted from the card. The credit card gift cards typically do not come with a PIN. If transacting the purchase on a keypad, do not choose “debit,” that will cause the transaction to be declined. Instead, choose “credit.” The card will be recognized as a gift card and the transaction will complete. When purchasing a gift card, it can be issued as a domestic or international card.
Credit card gift cards can be purchased at retail locations or online. To find a retail location, visit the credit card web page and there will be an index that lists retail locations. Chances are there is a location nearby where the gift card can be purchased. Another option is to purchase the gift card online. The purchaser has the option of receiving the credit card gift card or having it sent to the recipient. Another option when purchasing gift cards online is to activate it upon purchase or have the recipient activates the card. The activation process unlocks the card for use and keeps track of the purchases made and the remaining dollar value of the card.
When a credit card gift card is received, note the number of the card and the 800 number and keep it in a safe place. In the event a credit card gift card is lost or stolen a telephone call to the 800 number with the number of the card will allow the card to be cancelled and a replacement issued. Be sure to sign the back of the card for authentication. Some retailers will require identification when using a gift card.
If the purchaser of the gift card is giving the card as a gift, be sure to give the recipient all the pertinent materials that come with the card. That information will include the terms and condition for use, what to do in case the card is lost or stolen, the value of the card and all important contact information in case of loss or questions.
If purchases using a credit card gift card are made and a return or exchange is required, the retailer will require the presentation of the card to complete the return or the exchange. After the card is depleted in value, keep the card until it is certain that all items purchased will not be returned or exchanged.
